About Your Ukulele Tutor Jessica Bowie

Having played classical guitar from the age of nine, I went on to play ukulele and sing professionally and then to teach ukulele. I have a PTTLS teaching qualification (for teaching in adult education) and have previously taught ukulele and singing classes for Artforms, the WEA and the U3A . My musical education also includes flute, saxophone and piano accordion. I have Grade 5 Music Theory and Flute. I teach soprano, concert, tenor and banjo ukulele all in C tuning.

Specialist Ukulele Groups and Lessons

As well as my background in teaching, I have studied how people work and how to work with them to help them achieve their goals in music. I have a BSc hons Applied Psychology, PGCert Psych, PG Dip in Integrative Counselling and am currently completing an Masters Integrative Counselling. I am a trained practitioner and registered member of the Song Therapy Network. I have worked in clinical settings, (for example in Brain Injury Rehabilitation) and non-clinical leisure time settings (for example providing interactive music activities to people with dementia in residential homes). I am comfortable working with and teaching ukulele and singing to people with disabilities and those who have additional needs. I run a slower paced ukulele group where people can use adapted ukuleles to play at the push of a button (see the Ukulele Shape Shifters on the Groups page for more information). I also work in private practice as a psychotherapist and counsellor – you can find my therapy website here: www.jessicabowie.com.
